Permanent residence
Pathways to permanent status
The IND grants a permanent regular residence permit when you meet the general requirements, complete five consecutive years with a valid Dutch residence permit (only years from age 8 count toward that period), maintain your main residence in the Netherlands, extend permits on time, hold a non-temporary residence purpose, satisfy income rules, are registered in the BRP, pass civic integration at least at A2 (or hold an exemption), and did not provide false information in prior applications. The IND automatically checks EU long-term resident eligibility before issuing a standard permanent permit.
Compare pathways below — full eligibility, documents, and authority links are in each expandable section.

Citizenship
Naturalisation & special routes
Dutch nationality through naturalisation starts at your municipality: staff verify documents, collect fees, and forward the dossier to the IND. The IND has a 12‑month decision period. After approval you must attend the naturalisation ceremony within one year, take the Declaration of Solidarity, and receive the naturalisation decision before applying for Dutch travel documents. Option applications follow separate IND eligibility lists and are typically cheaper and integration-light.

| Option procedure Eligible applicants under option rules | Case-specific under option eligibility categories | In many option cases, no integration proof is required | Option route has different requirements from naturalisation | Lower than naturalisation according to IND |
