Healthcare in Italy — Expat Guide

Italy’s Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN) is a universal public health service. Workers with a valid permit, and their family members, must register and get the same treatment as Italian citizens.

How to register for healthcare

  1. Register with your local ASL (mandatory for workers and family members); the Tessera Sanitaria follows; choose a family doctor.
  2. You can choose your family doctor (medico di base) from those available in your area.
  3. Family members who join you are registered too.
